The Experiment
In January 2025, I committed to building a digital product business using AI tools as much as possible — writing, design, customer service, marketing, even the initial product ideation. The goal: $1,000 in revenue within 60 days, starting from zero.
This is an honest account. No hype, no affiliate marketing, no cherry-picking. Here's exactly what happened.
Day 1-7: Product Ideation and Validation
I used Claude to brainstorm 50 digital product ideas in niches where I had some background knowledge (marketing and productivity). Then I used Perplexity to research competition levels and market demand for the top 10 ideas.
Final choice: A Notion template bundle for freelance consultants. Rationale: clear audience, high search volume, manageable competition, strong precedent of sales on Gumroad.
AI tools used: Claude (ideation), Perplexity (research), ChatGPT (competitive analysis), Google Trends (demand validation)
Time invested: 12 hours. AI assistance value: High.
Day 8-21: Product Creation
I built 8 Notion templates covering: client onboarding, project management, invoice tracking, proposal writing, meeting notes, client relationship management, time tracking, and financial overview.
Claude wrote the instructional copy for each template. DALL-E 3 generated preview screenshots (yes, this is technically dishonest — I eventually replaced these with real screenshots). Canva Magic Write helped with product descriptions.
Time invested: 40 hours. AI assistance value: Medium. I still had to design and build the actual templates; AI helped with copy and ideation, not the core work.
Day 22-30: Launch Setup
I used AI for every element of the launch:
- Product page copy: Claude (3 iterations to get tone right)
- Pricing strategy: ChatGPT (analyzed 20 competitor products)
- Thumbnail design: Canva AI (functional but generic)
- FAQ section: Claude (generated from anticipated questions)
- Launch email: Claude (adapted from my swipe file)
Day 31-60: Marketing and Sales
This phase revealed AI's real limitations. AI can write social posts, but it can't build an audience. AI can draft outreach emails, but it can't replace genuine relationships.
What worked:
- Reddit: Genuine participation in r/freelance and r/Notion with AI-assisted responses (not AI-generated — I edited everything). Drove 60% of traffic.
- Twitter/X threads: AI helped structure my thinking; I wrote authentically. Drove 25% of traffic.
- Cold outreach: 47 personalized emails (AI-drafted, human-edited) to freelancers in my network. 12 sales direct.
What didn't work:
- AI-generated LinkedIn posts: Performed 70% worse than my natural posts
- AI-generated testimonials (yes, I tried this): Immediately obvious, felt wrong, abandoned after day 2
The Results
- Total revenue (60 days): $1,847
- Units sold: 47 bundles at $39.99
- Refund rate: 4.2% (2 refunds)
- Total time invested: ~120 hours
- Effective hourly rate: ~$15/hour
Not life-changing, but genuine validation that the concept works — and this was with zero existing audience and a first attempt.
Honest Assessment: What AI Can and Cannot Do
AI genuinely helps with: Research, first drafts, copy variations, idea generation, repetitive writing tasks, formatting, and basic design work.
AI cannot replace: Authentic relationships, unique expertise, genuine audience trust, product quality, and the human judgment that separates good strategy from great strategy.
The businesses that will win with AI are those that use it to handle the mechanical work so humans can focus on what humans uniquely do: make judgment calls, build relationships, and create things that genuinely help people.
